FYI News - February 2016

January 2016 Wrap-Up

Election Season is Upon Us!

With under 10 months until the 2016 general election, the election cycle is certainly getting underway. Two prominent names have thrown their hats into the ring to seek the Republican nomination for the White House: Sen. Anthony Granata (IL) and Senate President Pro Tempore Perry Driscoll (NV). The two Republicans launched their bids this month; no prominent Democrat has announced a formal campaign for 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as this went to press.

"Under my administration," Senator Granata said in his campaign launch speech, "Americans will be put back to work. They'll have their constitutional rights protected. They'll be protected by a strong national defense." Meanwhile, Senator Driscoll announced his bid focusing on trade restrictions with China, repealing Obamacare, and defeating ISIS.

Closer to home, recently elected Senate Minority Leader Robert Powell (D-CO) announced he would seek re-election to the Senate, rather than seeking the White House. Leader Powell announced his platform planks as being focused upon "restoring democracy, fighting for humanity, and caring about everyday Americans."

President Obama Moves Ahead with JCPOA

In a move that has drawn criticism from leading Republicans, including the two aforementioned presidential candidates, President Obama has lifted many sanctions from the Iranian economy following the agreement of the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action (JCPOA). While some sanctions related to counter-terrorism will remain in place, the nuclear-related sanctions have released. This is anticipated to result in more investment in Iran, which negotiated a pause to its nuclear enrichment and greater international inspections.

@realPerryDriscoll, the Twitter handle of presidential candidate and Senate President Pro Tempore Perry Driscoll (R-NV) wrote:

This Iran nuclear deal is a disaster! Thanks to President Obama, America is making Iran rich and leading the Middle East towards catastrophe!

This is just an example of the near-universal condemnation of the President's latest international move. While few prominent Democrats have spoken in defense, this move is seen as keeping with Obama's efforts to seek rapprochement with otherwise hostile foreign powers (such as easing travel restrictions on Cuba and the "reset" with Russia). The President addressed this issue in his State of the Union, saying, he "built a global coalition, with sanctions and principled diplomacy, to prevent a nuclear -armed Iran. And as we speak, Iran has rolled back its nuclear program, shipped out its uranium stockpile, and the world has avoided another  war."
