In 1934, the South African parliament enacted the Status of the Union Act, which declared South Africa to be an independent, sovereign nation. Since then, it has operated as such, though with significant ties to Great Britain nonetheless. South Africa, though initially divided as to which side to join, joined the war on Britain's side in 1939. Since then, it has been respected as an important power in its region.

South Africa is sharply divided between its black African population and the white Afrikaners, descendants of Dutch colonial settlers and huguenots. Afrikaners and other whites have held political power in the country with an iron grip, even passing laws in the past decades to prevent blacks from buying land outside specified reserves, along with other measures. There have been calls to enact legislation establishing "apartheid" (separateness), but those have yet to be enacted. (IRL, apartheid began in 1948, under the National Party).

Currently, the South African parliament is controlled by the United Party, first elected in 1934. The United Party is a pro-Commonwealth, conservative party, but they support the rights of non-whites ("coloured"). Their opposition is the National Party. The National Party is an Afrikaner-nationalist, pro-Apartheid, anti-Communist party. Right now, they seem to have the momentum to win the election in two years. Should they win, Apartheid will most surely be enacted.
