It wasn't long ago when the Ottoman Empire collapsed. After centuries of Ottoman dominance, Arabia was left to its own dominion after World War I. Ibn Saud took control of Riyadh, and he would go on to conquer much more territory, uniting it all under the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932. Fortune smiled on the fledgling kingdom, and oil was soon discovered in 1938 after many years of fruitless efforts.

Currently, Saudi Arabia is enjoying the profits from oil drilling, controlled by the American-owned company Aramco. Many want to pressure Aramco to share more of its profits. Saudi Arabia, through Aramco and other means, holds many economic ties to the United States, which could prove important in its alignment in the upcoming Cold War.

With King Abdulaziz aging, his successor will prove pivotal in the nation's future path. As a new enemy is formed in Palestine and as a new world order is established, these are crucial times for the young kingdom.
