Senator Fitzgerald introduces

A BILL

To prohibit illegal immigrants from sending remittances. 

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

(a) This act shall be cited as the Remittance Verification Act.

SEC. 2. REMITTANCE VERIFICATION.

(a) 31 CFR 130.121 is amended to redefine applicable financial institutions to include money transfer companies and redefine "account" to include wire transfers.

(b) Each remittance transfer provider shall request from each sender of a remittance transfer when the recipient of which is located in any country other than the United States, proof of the status of that sender under the immigration laws, prior to the initiation of the remittance transfer.

(c) Acceptable documentation of the status of the sender under this section shall be a State-issued driver's license or Federal passport; or the same documentation as required by the State for proof of identity for the issuance of a driver’s license, or as required for a passport.

(d) Each remittance transfer provider shall not allow any sender who is unable to provide the proof of status requested under paragraph (b) to conduct a remittance transfer. 

SEC. 3. ENACTMENT.

(a) This act shall take effect immediately.
