Washington, DC – Rep. Kyle Fitzgerald (R-WV) spoke to the press after introducing the Opioid Crisis Accountability Act.

“The opioid crisis has ravaged America, and my home state of West Virginia is ground zero of the epidemic. Pharmaceutical companies flooded our state and our country with highly addictive pills that trapped millions of Americans into addiction and despair. We can’t allow anything like this to happen again, and that’s why I introduced the Opioid Crisis Accountability Act. This bill prevents another crisis like this from occurring by prohibiting false claims regarding the addictive nature of opioids and knowingly supplying communities with quantities of opioids that are not medically reasonable. The bill imposes civil and even criminal penalties for individuals and corporations who are in violation of this law. Furthermore, a fee will be assessed against the opioid manufacturers who were responsible for this crisis. They must pay for their actions and help us rebuild our country in the aftermath of this epidemic.”
