From the Office of Democratic Representative Litzy Gonzalez

Recently and without amendment, my legislation the Countering Global White Supremacist Terrorism Act was signed into law by President Joe Biden. This legislation takes much needed steps to counter the rising global nature of white supremacist terrorism and treats it equally to that of others forms of terrorism such as Islamic radical terrorism.

This is legislation that you would think everyone in Congress could support, but you'd be wrong. In the House, 61 Republicans notably including representative Kyle Fitzgerald and 1 Democrat voted against the legislation. Additionally in the Senate 19 Republicans voted against the legislation that being: Tommy Tuberville, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, Mike Crapo, Mike Braun, Chuck Grassley, Jerry Moran, Mitch McConnell, John Kennedy, Roger Wicker, Josh Hawley, Richard Burr, John Hoeven, Jim Inhofe, Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, Ted Cruz, and John Barrasso.

It certainly in inexcusable the lone Democrat in name only that voted against this legislation, but if anything debate over this bill has shown that the Republican party has a major problem with not even being willing to oppose with the full force of the government the rise in global white supremacist terrorism. In a growingly diverse nation of immigrants this should be a canary in the coal mine to so many about who these people are. We're not just talking about fringe members of Congress here, we're talking about Republican party leadership. Even more alarming, the silence of so called "moderate Republicans" unwilling to call out the behavior of their own party members. So called moderates such as Christopher Drake who did vote in support of the legislation still has nothing to say about this party colleagues voting to enable white supremacy. Not criticizing fellow Republicans takes priority over doing what is right. It's disgusting and we can do so much better.

Racism is still clearly a problem in this country and it's not just a problem in the shadows.
