WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative Christopher Drake (R-NY-2) spoke with reporters about the new omicron variant of COVID-19, which has recently popped up in the United States after being discovered first in South Africa. Representative Drake urged citizens and legislators to remain calm, use common sense, and avoid overreacting.

“The data we have so far omicron does not indicate that it’s especially deadly or dangerous. In fact, it appears quite mild for most healthy people. It doesn’t represent a significant risk for them. So, if you’re vaccinated, if you’ve developed natural immunity even, you’ll be fine. Kids will be fine. Adults will be fine. It may spread a lot, but as long as we keep hospitals open and well-equipped and as long as we remain flexible, we don’t need to panic.

“In fact, I’d say if we panic and start shutting everything down again, that’ll do even more harm. The economy is in the tank right now, and small businesses in my district are struggling with supply chain problems and labor shortages, among other things. Lockdowns don’t work, as we saw in 2020, but if we start doing that again, it’s going to kill more jobs, shutter more businesses, and we just don’t need that. Bottom line is: wash your hands, wear a mask in enclosed, tight spaces, talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated. That’s the approach we need. Older folks and immuno-compromised people, we need to make it to where they can shelter, where the vaccine and boosters are readily and easily available for them, where therapeutics are at the ready, because they’re the ones we need to watch out for. They’re the ones that could still be at risk. That’s just common sense, and I think that’s the approach we should take.”

Representative Drake continues to encourage his constituents to get vaccinated or to discuss vaccination with their doctor. Vaccines have been proven to be effective, especially for those who are at greater risk of death or severe illness from COVID-19, at reducing the impact of the disease on individuals. He does not support mandates imposed by any governments.
