Dr. CHARLES T. MARKHAM III
REPUBLICAN FROM VIRGINIA

Charles Taylor Markham III was born October 3, 1965 in Charlottesville, VA, to Charles Taylor Markham Jr and his wife, Henrietta (nee Randolph). His father, a distant member of the Leiningen family, was a businessman and politician who, in 1977, ran an unsuccessful bid to become Governor of Virginia; his mother is the great-great-great granddaughter of Gen. George W. Randolph, a descendant of Thomas Jefferson and former Virginia militia leader. Charles attended Phillips Exeter Academy as a boy, where he played football. He then attended the College of William and Mary where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Economics. He then went on to attend the London School of Economics, where he obtained a Master's in Economics, and, subsequently, a Ph.D. He headed the Economics department at his alma mater, the College of William and Mary, from 1997. In 2004, he left William and Mary College to take on the role of Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy under President George W. Bush. He remained in that position until 2009 when Bush left office. During his time in the role, Markham was actively involved in the planning and implementation of TARP. In 2012, Markham was nominated and confirmed for the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve. His term ended in 2016, at which time he was invited to join the Council of Economic Advisors for the Donald Trump administration. He accepted, but only served for 6 months before resigning in protest against the "backwards and inward-looking economic policy direction that will wreak havoc on this country's citizens from top to bottom." He is a member of the American Enterprise Institute, the Milken Institute, and the Bipartisan Policy Center. He is also the Congressman for Virginia's First District, elected in 2018.
