New Story Research

All media outlets are encouraged to research news stories, giving the agency that discovers it a business advantage as they are able to break the news. These news stories also include character scandals, giving even more incentive to conduct research. The likelihood of successfully researching a character scandal is limited to a max of 60% and 75% for any other news story. To conduct research, news agency owners should post a reply to this thread each month. There is no minimum nor maximum budget. A table of the average expected prices for each activity is listed below. Use your best judgement if you think you're investigating a minor or major story (as obviously a larger budget is more likely to discover a larger story).

Quote

Name: (The name of the news agency)

Research Budget: (The amount being spent on this research task)

Subject Researching: (The target of the research. This is optional, though recommended to give the admins a guideline of what you're looking for.)

The template should be completed for each research attempt by an agency, but it should be pointed out that news agencies are not limited to just one research attempt each month. Outlets can (and likely will) attempt to research multiple subjects and/or leads per month.

  Average Price (millions)
% Success Scandals Minor News Stories Major News Stories
10% $10 million $100,000 $1 million
30% $50 million $300,000 $3 million
50% $100 million $500,000 $5 million
60% $200 million $1 million $10 million
70% - $2 million $20 million
75% - $3 million $30 million

OOC: Since this is an often underutilized mechanic, let's take a sec to discuss its potential (because it is significant). For things like this, it is helpful to put yourself in the mind of an investigative journalist. Do you have a theory you want to run down? A particular person you want to interview that you think has an important piece of information? Do you want to try to obtain some security camera footage somewhere? The missing anchor story is a good example for this, but it can be applied to any issue or story, big or small. For a smaller story like a missing person, a smaller budget will get you further than a huge investigation (for example, if you were to research infrastructure in the upper Midwest could've lead to discovering the Flint water crisis).
